Zanzibar is officially part of Tanzania, but is independent enough to make you go through passport control when arriving from the mainland. Zanzibar for centuries was an important trading center, primarily for spices and, sadly, for slaves, until that practice was outlawed in 1873 under threat of British naval bombardment. Zanzibar is mostly Muslim; Arab traders introduced Islam here in the 12th century. That influence can be seen in the architecture and ornate carved-wood doors of Stone Town.
