Denali Backcountry

Denali National Park is a backpacking paradise. There are no established trails; instead you can wander as you please, adding to a sense of wilderness and exploration. From late August into the beginning of September the tundra colors grow increasingly dramatic at your feet, while you catch occasional glimpses of the Alaska Range beyond. Dramatic rainbows form in the periodic rain showers. And, unlike early summer, the mosquitos are gone. Ahh. While I had previously visited the glaciated heart of the Alaska Range, which also lies in this national park, being on the tundra and in the river valleys was a completely different experience.
